While ad blockers have been available for desktop Web browsers for some time, Apple’s announcement to allow ad blocking applications in the app store coupled with comments from mobile operators about network-based ad blocking has stoked a new wave of anxiety for marketers.

In a recent article in Mobile Advertising Watch, “Ad Blocking: It’s a Sticky Situation for Marketers,” I explore how ad blocking puts mobile marketers in a tough spot between freedom of speech and unfettered access arguments on one side, and consumer control and choice on the other. With the introduction of ad blocking at the device and in the network, engaging customers means marketers must evolve from pushing generic messages to delivering personalized experiences that engage customers and provide transparency to business processes.
